For more than ten years, JCDecaux has been greening street furniture in line with local authorities. In 2024, as part of its ongoing greening program, the company launched a new experiment to encourage the mouvement of species between urban biodiversity reservoirs in cities.
To find shelter, feed and thrive, many species need to travel between urban biodiversity reservoirs. This approach uses our network of existing street furniture to connect these reservoirs. With the approval of the City of Paris, JCDecaux has installed plants and birdhouses on 19 pieces of street furniture (display flagpoles, columns, bus shelters and kiosks) located between the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Jardin des Plantes, aiming to contribute to the development of biodiversity in the city. The installations recreate green corridors that allow fauna and flora to travel around in a favourable environment in the heart of the city.
The green street furniture, designed to be water-efficient and sustainable, includes a range of nectar-producing plants that play a key-role for pollinating insects, as well as the addition of species suited to the Parisian climate to ensure sustainable growth and year-round plant coverage.
To ensure the healthy development and sustainability of the plantations, the integration, installation and maintenance of the plants are fully managed and carried out by JCDecaux teams, supported by a landscape gardener. They provide meticulous and regular maintenance, including watering with rainwater, pruning and monitoring the proper development of plants.
La Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux (LPO - League for the Protection of Birds) supports JCDecaux in this initiative, conducting comprehensive naturalist inventories to ensure the relevance of each installation. A rigorous scientific approach evaluates the effectiveness of this urban ecological network, using precise measurements of its impacts on biodiversity and identifying potential improvements. This research lays the groundwork for a potential large-scale deployment, with the goal of expanding the project based on the experiment's results.
JCDecaux demonstrates that urban innovation can go hand in hand with preserving urban biodiversity thanks to its unique greening project in Paris. By connecting urban biodiversity reservoirs, the company is leading the way in the development of more resilient cities.
