Launched in 2023, the “Make a Safety Statement” campaign by the United Nations and JCDecaux aims to reduce road traffic crashes, the leading cause of death among young people aged 5 to 29. Already deployed in over 40 countries, this initiative calls for adherence to road safety rules.

Supported by 17 celebrities and Olympic and Paralympic athletes, the campaign is part of the New Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to halve the number of road fatalities by 2030.

Deployed in over 40 countries, including Belgium, the United States, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates, the campaign is visible on JCDecaux’s street furniture in public places such as airports, railway stations, metros and shopping malls, aiming to reach a broad audience.

The campaign was launched in Japan in May 2025.

Every year, road traffic crashes claim 1.19 million lives and seriously injure over 50 million people. This tragedy predominantly affects developing countries, accounting for more than 90% of road deaths. Road traffic accidents are also the leading cause of death among children and young people aged 5 to 29.

The campaign features straightforward and impactful messages delivered by global celebrities, including Ousmane Dembélé, Charles Leclerc, Michelle Yeoh, Novak Djokovic, Kylie Minogue, Marc Márquez, Naomi Campbell, Patrick Dempsey, Youssou N'Dour, Julie Gayet, Michael Fassbender, Didier Drogba, Faith Kipyegon, Mick Schumacher, Jean Reno, Teddy Riner and Tadej Pogačar. They advocate for responsible behaviour, such as wearing seat belts, driving at an appropriate speed, and respecting pedestrians and cyclists.

Announced during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Global Road Safety in July 2022, the "Make a Safety Statement" campaign is set to be rolled out in 80 countries and 1,000 cities by the end of 2025.

Road safety is not high enough on the political agenda in most countries. While we know the remedies to road crashes, action is lagging behind. With this campaign, we are trying to turn the tide and mobilise the political will to increase action and funding to save millions of lives, in line with the objectives of the Decade of Action for Road Safety.
