  • Through our work to reduce our carbon emissions, we have made a real commitment to supporting the following Sustainable Development Goals:

    Our contribution to the SDG
Sustainable Development - CSR - RSE - ODD 7 13 - SDG 7 13 - JCDecaux

Our Climate Strategy, defined at the Group level, gives concrete expression to our commitments through an ambitious policy aligned with the Paris Agreement, aimed at achieving Net Zero carbon by 2050. In June 2024, JCDecaux’s Group carbon reduction trajectory was approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

JCDecaux's transition plan

Faced with various climate challenges, JCDecaux is firmly committed to taking concrete measures to mitigate or adapt to climate change. Aware of its responsibility as a global player in outdoor advertising, JCDecaux has developed ambitious and robust climate policies, integrated at the core of its business strategy.

In June 2023, JCDecaux unveiled its Climate Strategy, including targets to continue reducing its carbon footprint across its entire value chain. Based on three principles – Measure, Reduce and Contribute beyond the Group's value chain, the strategy aims for Net Zero Carbon by 2050 (scopes 1, 2 and 3). To achieve this, JCDecaux defined a roadmap based on the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) that is backed up by scientific data.

In June 2024, SBTi reviewed and approved JCDecaux’s carbon reduction targets.

The SBTi validation team confirmed that the near-term objectives for scopes 1 and 2 are in line with a trajectory of 1.5°C, and that the long-term objectives for scopes 1, 2 and 3 are aligned with mitigation trajectories of 1.5° C to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050.

  • Overall Net-Zero Target:
    • JCDecaux SE commits to reach net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050.

  • Near-Term Targets:
    • JCDecaux SE commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 72.8% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
    • JCDecaux SE also commits to continue active annual sourcing of 100% renewable electricity through to 2030
    • JCDecaux SE further commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel and energy related activities, business travel and employee commuting by 46.2% within the same timeframe.

  • Long-Term Targets:
    • JCDecaux SE commits to reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year.
    • JCDecaux SE also commits to continue active annual sourcing of 100% renewable electricity through to 2050.

A trajectory aligned with the Paris Agreement and aiming for Net Zero Carbon by 2050

Scope 1: Combustion of fossil fuels (petrol, natural gas, fuel oil) in vehicles and buildings
Scope 2: Electricity and district heating
Scope 3: Fixed assets and services, other fuels, goods transport, financial investments, waste management, personal and business travel

1/ Our carbon footprint

We measure our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) which consists of converting activity data into CO2 equivalent according to existing international standards (GHG Protocol, financial approach). This measurement covers JCDecaux’s entire value chain (scopes 1, 2 and 3) and relies, as far as possible, on emission factors specific to its business and its furniture.

Our carbon emissions are yearly audited and certified by our Independent Third Party.

2/ Our decarbonation levers

The Group’s climate change mitigation policy is based on two major areas

  • Reducing emissions in the Group’s operations: with a presence in more than 80 countries, JCDecaux operates a fleet of more than 800,000 street furniture and has a fleet of more than 4,900 vehicles, mainly used for servicing, display, maintenance and furniture transportation. The electricity consumption of furniture and vehicle fuel are the Group’s main sources of carbon emissions in scopes 1 and 2.
  • Reducing emissions throughout the value chain: JCDecaux assesses its indirect environmental footprint by measuring its emissions on scope 3, which represents 90% (market-based) and 54% (location-based) of total GHG emissions of the Group, with 42% of emissions related to furniture deployed. JCDecaux is committed to acting both upstream and downstream of its value chain, to reduce or avoid carbon emissions. The levers associated with reducing the emissions of our furniture depend heavily on close collaboration with cities.

JCDecaux’s reduction trajectory is thus based on internal levers as well as on exogenous factors:

Furniture
Energy
Travel
Refurbishment

Vehicles

- Logistical route optimisation
- Vehicle downsizing
- Low emission vehicles

Reducing business travels

Ecodesign

- Source low-carbon materials
- Select low-emission designs

Buildings

- Transition to alternatives to fossil fuel
- Energy saving actions on buildings

Alternative modes of transport
Low emission/recycled  materials for posting

Furniture

- Optimised digital displays
- Smart lighting on furniture
- Switching off furniture

3/ CONTRIBUTE

Until 2050, the contribution to carbon neutralisation is voluntary. The financing of carbon reduction projects is done outside the Group’s value chain, without being taken into account in the achievement of climate objectives. From 2050, after achieving the long-term targets to reduce emissions to a residual level in accordance with the 1.5°C limit, carbon neutralisation and permanent storage will be required to achieve Net Zero, in accordance with SBTi commitments of JCDecaux.

In addition to efforts to reduce near- and long-term emissions, some Group subsidiaries voluntarily support projects through carbon credits that provide quantifiable benefits for the climate, as well as co-benefits for people and nature. The actions and targets to neutralise emissions will be gradually developed and implemented in the coming years, in order to guarantee the achievement of the Group’s climate objectives.
