In order to satisfy the growing needs of cities, JCDecaux invests in research & development focused on “multi-functional” and “intelligent” street furniture. The Group has created an integrated design studio for this very purpose, comprised of 110 engineers and technicians responsible for developing new solutions designed to enhance urban development.

Recent innovations include:
- Remote controlled advertising panels (time sharing): by displaying advertising campaigns at precise dates and times, the “time sharing” system revolutionizes the traditional billboard system and opens up new prospects for a rapidly evolving advertising medium.

- Cyclocity®: a bicycle hire scheme linked to electronic terminals. 900 bicycles have been delivered to the city of Vienna, Austria, while the cities of Gijon and Cordoba in Spain have also adopted this system. In 2005, the Urban Community of Lyons was equipped with 1,000 bicycles. In 2006, Brussels has been equipped with Cyclcocity® (250 bicycles), and there are 3,000 Vélo'v in Lyon and Marseille and Mulhouse have chosen Cyclocity. - We made significant breakthroughs in the area of acquisition of expertise and the development of products based on Digital technologies. Our R&D, Purchasing and Digital Media teams put out a full range of equipment for meeting indoor and outdoor needs. These included: LCD and PLASMA displays in formats ranging between 17’’ and 103’’, LED displays with a 10mm or 6mm pitch depending on use and allowing formats of several tens of square metres. These products were developed and selected after very extensive assessment procedures (tests in laboratories, tests under real-life conditions, and comparative tests in the presence of manufacturers). They ensure that JCDecaux has the most technically efficient products to create the most value for the company. These developments were implemented with the installation of billboards both in Europe (The Torch advertising tower in London) and in Asia (Shanghai Airports).
